GYEON Leather Prep and Exterior Paint Prep: Three Products, Two Separate Jobs

Good preparation is not one universal routine. GYEON offers different products for different surfaces and different preparation goals. This feature covers two things GYEON helps you prep properly: leather upholstery, where cleaning comes before protection, and exterior paint, where existing coatings, sealants, or factory waxes may need to be removed before applying something new.

1. Leather upholstery care: clean, then protect

Leather preparation and leather protection are separate steps. GYEON Q²M LeatherCleaner Natural is the cleaning and preparation product, while GYEON Q² Leather Shield is the coating intended to protect suitable modern automotive leather upholstery.

Start with LeatherCleaner Natural

Q²M LeatherCleaner Natural is a mild, pH-neutral cleaner for all types of modern automotive leather. It was developed especially with delicate nappa and semi-aniline upholstery in luxury and sports cars in mind, while remaining suitable for modern leather upholstery generally. It removes light dirt, oily residue, and light discolouration without adding softening or preserving additives. That matters during preparation: the surface is left ready for a coating, with a fully matte finish.

Vacuum the upholstery before cleaning. For light contamination or daily maintenance, spray the cleaner onto a microfiber cloth and wipe gently. For stronger contamination, spray a small area and work it with a quality leather brush. Use straight cleaning motions rather than rubbing dirt back into the surface, and remove the loosened dirt as you go. The product can also be used on leather that is already coated without removing the coating.

The objective is not to make the leather glossy or to change how it feels. It is to remove the contamination that would interfere with a clean, consistent coating application. Allow the surface to be properly clean and remove any excess cleaner before moving to the protection step.

Apply Leather Shield only to suitable leather

Q² Leather Shield is an advanced SiO2-based ceramic leather coating for modern automotive leather upholstery. It provides protection against dirt, UV rays, and everyday wear. One layer is required, and the coating is designed not to change the leather’s finish, feel, or colour. It leaves a fully matte finish, does not stiffen the leather, and does not make it more slippery.

There is an important limitation: do not use Leather Shield on open-structure, aniline, or semi-aniline leather upholstery. Identify the leather type before coating, and test on a panel before full application. A clean surface alone is not permission to coat every kind of leather.

For suitable leather, work one panel at a time and apply the coating with even coverage. Do not wipe it off. Check the panel after 20 minutes to see whether levelling is needed. This clean-then-protect sequence keeps the two products in their proper roles: LeatherCleaner Natural prepares the upholstery, and Leather Shield adds protection where the leather is suitable for it.

2. Exterior paint prep: removing what is already there

GYEON Q²M Total Remover is not a leather product and it is not part of the upholstery routine. It is an exterior-paint coating and sealant remover for a different preparation job: chemically removing existing sealants, old coatings, and factory waxes from external vehicle surfaces without harming them.

When a detailer would reach for Total Remover

Total Remover is useful when the next step requires a more predictable exterior-paint surface. A detailer may use it to prepare a factory-fresh car before applying a coating, or to remove an old coating without relying on extensive polishing. It can also be useful for matte paint jobs or cured high spots on delicate substrates. The purpose is to remove the existing protection or residue that needs to come off before something new is applied, not to combine exterior paint preparation with leather care.

Use it on clean, wet paintwork, ideally during the preparation wash. Spray liberally onto one panel at a time, work the product in with a dedicated mitt, and let it sit for 30 seconds before rinsing it off. Keeping the work panel by panel gives the detailer a controlled process for treating the exterior surface.

These products therefore represent two separate preparation decisions. For leather upholstery, clean with LeatherCleaner Natural and, only when the leather is suitable, protect with Leather Shield. For exterior paint, use Total Remover when old coatings, sealants, or factory waxes need to be removed before a new application. Matching the product to the surface is the preparation step that keeps the process honest and useful.
