How to Start a Car Detailing Business in India: The Complete Guide

Car detailing has become one of the more accessible service businesses in India: the investment is modest compared with many businesses, and a well-run studio can be established in a short time. But it is a skill business, and the market is crowded with over-hyped products and unrealistic promises. This guide walks through the decisions that matter, in the order you will face them, and links to deeper guides for each step.

We have been in this market since 2010. GreenZ Car Care started detailing services in 2010, launched India’s first online premium car care store in 2012 and started the GreenZ Car Detailing Academy in 2013, so much of what follows comes from watching hundreds of studios start up, and from the mistakes we have seen them make.

Is car detailing a good business to start?

It can be, for the right person. The main attractions are the low investment and the short time it takes to get established. The honest limits are that detailing is skill-based, results depend on the people doing the work, and customers can tell a studio that takes shortcuts. If you enjoy the craft and are willing to build a reputation slowly, it works. If you are looking for fast money, the market’s over-hyped claims (lifetime warranties, scratch-proof coatings, 10 to 12 layers) will tempt you into promises you cannot keep.

What detailing actually is

Detailing is the process of thoroughly cleaning, enhancing, restoring and protecting all parts of a vehicle to keep it looking its best and retain its value. It differs from a car wash or a polish in the time spent, the tools and products used, and the quality of the result. At GreenZ we work in four stages: cleaning and decontamination, correction, protection, and maintenance. You can see each stage in detail on our GreenZ Auto Detailing Process page.

Step 1: Get trained properly

Because detailing is a skill business, training comes first. It is better to train yourself as well as your team, so you understand the process you are selling. A good course covers washing, decontamination, paint inspection and correction, paint protection, maintenance, and also the business side: marketing, customer handling and operations. Our GreenZ Car Detailing Academy runs training of 2 to 4 days, with shadow and reverse-shadow support afterwards. Read what to look for in a detailing course before you choose any provider.

Step 2: Get hands-on practice before you open

Training introduces products, tools and processes, but it cannot give you skill: that comes from doing the work. Practise on your own and friends’ cars, ask your trainer about shadowing opportunities at an existing studio, and run a soft launch before the grand opening. Our 10 tips to start a car detailing business article covers this in more detail.

Step 3: Choose your location

Location matters a lot in India. Many studios start in or near the city centre, which means higher rent that you will need to recover from customers, so balance proximity to your customers against the rental cost. Look for good road access and ample parking, close to residential areas and offices, and pick the area based on the customers you want to serve.

Step 4: Set up the studio

A tidy, well-organised bay makes every job faster and more professional. Plan zones for washing, correction, protection and interiors, with proper lighting and storage within reach. Our guide to setting up a detailing studio covers layout, storage and the equipment that earns its place.

Step 5: Buy the right products and tools

Never compromise on chemicals, machines and accessories, but also do not buy everything at once. Start with what the services you will actually sell require. Our starter kit guide maps real products to each stage of the process and shows what can wait.

Step 6: Decide your services and prices

Pricing is where many new studios go wrong, usually by under-cutting. Under-cutting leads to diluted processes and inferior products, and nobody benefits, including the customer. Work out what each job really costs you in products, labour and overheads before quoting. For market reference points, our guides show that ceramic coating in India runs from about ₹20,000 to ₹1,20,000, and a full-body PPF installation with good-quality film runs from about ₹80,000 for a hatchback to ₹2,00,000+ for a full-size SUV (see our guides on ceramic coating prices and PPF installation cost). The full method is in how to price car detailing services.

Step 7: Get your first customers

Reaching customers takes a plan. Use social media and a Google business page with your address, show your work, and ask happy customers for honest reviews. Our guide on getting your first customers goes through it step by step.

Step 8: Choose a product partner

As a studio you will buy products every month, so a consistent supplier matters. Customers can feel it when you switch brands, because it looks like a lack of confidence in what you use. GreenZ has several levels for detailing businesses, as listed on our GreenZ Affiliation page:

  • Detailer Customer: for an existing detailing business that has bought products worth ₹5,000 and can place a monthly minimum order of ₹5,000. It unlocks the DETAILER discount (8% on orders of ₹7,000 and above) and DISC50K (15% on orders of ₹50,000 and above).
  • GYEON Detailer: for businesses that want to follow the GYEON process without deviation. It needs an initial order worth ₹2,50,000 to get the products the process requires, and gives 10% on orders of ₹10,000 and above.
  • Franchisee: for franchise opportunities, which you can discuss with us directly.

Terms change, so always check the current conditions on the affiliation page or contact us before you plan around them.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Under-cutting competitors. It forces you to dilute the process or use inferior products. A healthy relationship with your competition helps the whole market grow.
  • Switching brands often. Customers read inconsistency as a lack of confidence.
  • Taking shortcuts. You charge for a package with a defined process and products, so deliver all of it.
  • Believing the hype. Read our article on the over-hypes around ceramic coating before you promise a customer anything.
  • Skipping the learning. Detailing technology keeps changing, so keep training and keep testing.

Where to go next

If you are still deciding, start with the training. If you are ready to build, work through the studio, starter kit and pricing guides above. And if you want to talk through your plan, contact us and tell us about your location and the services you want to offer.
